I have very mixed feelings about this book. I had been suggested it by my mother in law & had been warned of it's adult content. Wow it definitely had a lot of "adult content" I should say. The first half of the book took me at least a month to get through because I found it to be so boring. I would have just dropped it & moved on to another book, but felt obligated to keep reading since I had already purchased the 2nd book & everyone seemed to think it was so great. The second half was much better. It also was full of crude, disturbing & graphic things. It was sort of a car accident for me. Even though it was a wreck I felt like I had to see it. (Especially after such a long boring ride) So I do think it is very well written and was a great mystery. I haven't however decided if I'm going to read the second book.. I just don't know if I should know better than to look at "car accidents" so to speak? If you have read the 2nd & have an opinion for me I would love to hear it. If not I am neither for or against this book.
I couldn't agree more with you about this book. I was so bored throughout the first half but stick with it (in spite of the horrid images and language). I read the second one all the way through and it was just okay for me. I chose not to read the third and just ended up skimming the wikipedia article to find out what happened.
ReplyDeleteHave you read The Time Traveler's Wife? It's got a few crude parts as well but I loved it.
When are you coming up to Utah next? Let's meet for lunch/dinner if you have time.
Thanks Blair, that was helpful. I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I'm coming this weekend to Utah but for a short trip. I'm coming for 10 days before Halloween! So let's get together then for sure & plan our girls trip!
ReplyDeleteCassie I read it too and feel the exact same way... so hard to get through but impossible to put down. And yeah I didn't bother with the second because I figured it would be a hard read as well! I really liked Water for Elephants if you haven't read that yet! (p.s. this is Meg, not Ladd)
ReplyDeleteOk so looks like that's 2 for NO on the second book. That's a cute title, I will try it out! I love book suggestions, Thanks Meg/Ladd! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read it, but I can second that Water For Elephants was a good read
